Adam Keunen Memorial Tournament - Champions
Congratulations to our Niagara Falls Flyers Midget Hockey Club who won the Adam Keunen Memorial Tournament over the weekend of October 18 – 20, 2019.
Our Flyers started the tournament Friday night with a 5-1 win over St. Catharines and on Saturday played to a 5-5 tie against a very tough West Niagara Flying Aces following that game up with a 3-2 win against Stoney Creek. With a round robin record of 2W-0L-1T, our team was seeded first going into the Sunday Final.
The Sunday Final was a rematch against the West Niagara Flying Aces against our Niagara Falls Flyers. The game started with sustained pressure from the host tournament team West Niagara which our Midgets weathered this initial storm. The entire game was a very close affair with multiple scoring opportunities traded throughout the game.
The first period ended 0-0, the second period ended 0-0 and it wasn’t until late in the 3rd with less then 5 minutes remaining in the game where our Flyers broke through on a goal scored by Keegan Thomson (assisted by Ross Davis and Eric Stevens) to give our Flyers a 1-0 lead. With West Niagara pressing, our Flyers were able to fight off the late surge when Thomson scored again (assisted by Jake Keen) with less then 2 minutes remaining in the game. The team held on for the shutout win for Markus Shantz.
