Niagara Falls Bantam AA Flyers Successfully Defend Buffalo Cup
Submitted By Julia Paul on Monday, December 30, 2019
Fresh off winning the 2018 Buffalo Cup, the Niagara Falls Bantam AA Flyers had big expectations going into the 2019 Tournament.  With an injury depleted lineup the team delivered, winning this year’s installment and successfully defending their title.

In game one of the tournament the Flyers dominated the Buffalo Regals with a convincing 9-1 victory.  The game was a coming out party for the line of Nathan Carter, Riley Smyth, and Zachary Whalen who combined for five of the Flyers nine goals.

The team sailed through the rest of the opening round finishing in first place with a record of 3-0-1 after beating the York Devils and Rochester Grizzlies, then setting for a tie with the Peterborough Petes.  Noah Lebrasseaur and Dante D’Amario did a great job of creating scoring chances for high flying Brady McEachern who sniped three goals in the opening games.

The Semi-Final saw the Flyers take a rematch game against the York Devils by a score of 2-0 behind the solid play of Jared D’addio who notched the shutout in goal.  Connor McEachern and Eric Lapointe both scored for Niagara Falls giving each three goals apiece in the tournament; no doubt benefiting by the physical play of linemate Landen Lamb-Ward.

In the final a nice tick-tack-toe play from Whalen, Carter, and Smyth was all the Flyers needed to beat Peterborough again and clinch the Cup.  Jackson Fillmore was the winning goaltender shutting out the Petes for the second time in consecutive days.

Stefan Candeloro lead the offence from the back end with six points from the blueline in the tournament.  Candeloro’s defensive mates of Donavin Ingribelli, Owen Messina, and Braedan Deslandes played some big minutes due to injuries to the Flyer blueline.  The defensive core were a big reason the team only surrendered four goals over six games.

The Flyers are back in action with two league games this week as they try to chase down the leaders in the final weeks of the Tri-County Bowen Division.
