Minor Bantam AA Flyers Win Buffalo Cup
Submitted By Julia Paul on Tuesday, December 11, 2018
For the second time in less than a month, the Niagara Falls Minor Bantam AA Flyers marched south of the border and returned to Canada with a tournament victory.  This time the Flyers won the AA Buffalo Cup, going undefeated over the course of Three days...

In the preliminary round Niagara Falls finished with a 2-0-2 record against Orchard Lake, Richmond Hill, Buffalo, and the Rock City.  The most dramatic play of the opening two days saw defenseman, Stefan Candeloro speed down the the ice with a few seconds left on the clock. Fighting off a bouncing puck and several defenders, he buried an empty net goal.  Despite speculation that the net was knocked off, the ref signaled a goal, clinching top spot in the division for the Flyers.

After finishing first in their division, the Flyers gained a much needed bye in the Quarter Finals on Sunday morning, before an afternoon of drama ensued.

Up against a strong Syracuse Valley team in the Semi-finals, Niagara Falls battled to a 2-2 draw at end of regulation.  A Five minute overtime saw no goals scored setting up a shootout to decide the winner.   Riley Smyth, Liam Deitch, and Noah Lebrasseur all found the back of the net on consecutive goals in the shootout and Jared D'Addio chipped in with a sparkling glove save to send the Flyers to the Finals.

The Championship game capped off a long week for Niagara Falls who were playing in their Seventh game in less than Four days.  The team banded together, and left everything on the ice resulting in another tie after regulation.  This time, the 3 on 3 overtime frame decided the a winner with Candeloro beating the Southtown Stars goalie with a high wrist shot late in the period.

The Flyers get back to work this week wrapping up their regular season schedule before chasing down their goal of an OMHA championship early in the new year.
